Challenge

1960s Japanese Automatic, Power Reserve Failing

An owner brought in a 1960s Japanese automatic that had been passed through two previous repairers. Power reserve was down to under six hours. Prior bench work had used incorrect lubricant grades, leaving residue in the barrel.

Solution

Calibre Overhaul with Extended Barrel Work

A full overhaul was carried out with particular attention to the barrel — wall cleaned, spring inspected and found serviceable, appropriate mainspring grease applied. Reversing wheels were worn and replaced. Rate adjustment across five positions took two rounds on the timing machine to achieve consistent figures.

Outcome

Power Reserve Restored to 38 Hours

Power reserve measured at 38 hours after completion — consistent with the movement specification. Rate deviation reduced to within acceptable tolerance. The owner received a bench card noting the prior lubricant issue and the corrective steps taken. Timeline: 14 working days.

Challenge

Heirloom Piece, Faded and Damaged Dial

A 1970s Swiss dress watch, passed down within a Penang family for two generations, arrived with a dial showing significant fading, two missing lume dots, and a hairline crack at the 6 o'clock position. The owner was uncertain whether to restore or conserve.

Solution

Dial Archive Project, Conservation Outcome

Comparison samples were prepared showing both conservation (crack stabilised, patina retained, lume dots relumed in a period-matched tone) and full restoration (factory appearance replicated). After review, the owner chose conservation. High-resolution photographs were taken before the dial departed. Movement and case were serviced at Ticklore during the 11-week interim.

Outcome

Complete Return with Archival Folder

The watch was returned with the crack stabilised, lume matching the period tone, and the movement serviced. The archival folder contained the before photographs, the comparison samples, the decision note signed by the owner, and the final outcome record. Total project: 11 weeks from intake.
